Quy Hoa National Leprosy - Dermatology Hospital and ACI team conducted 2018 cleft mission

From August 24th to 31th 2018, Quyhoa National Leprosy - Dermatology Hospital (QuyhoaNDH) cooperated with the NGO from USA named Asia Connection Inc. (ACI) and National Odonto - Maxillofacial Hospital of HCM city to conduct the screening and surgery mission for cleft lip and palate patients in the Central - Highlands region. During more than one week of work, the team coordinated with the staffs of QuyhoaNDH to screen for about 120 patients, 51 of whom were operated and 10 of whom were given speech therapy.
In the third year of the mission, most of operated patients are children affected by unilateral cleft lip, bilateral cleft lip, cleft palate, fistula,...All operated patients have gained good results. In addition, the patients were instructed to improve speech ability by the speech therapists.
At the review meeting, both sides evaluated the achievements and limitations of the mission, and discussed the mission next year as well as the prospects for upgrading this program. Dr. Tuan Anh Vu, Director of QuyhoaNDH, expressed his deep gratitude for the ACI humane activity for cleft patients and highlighted that it is a great opportunity for QuyhoaNDH staffs to learn from ACI experts. He hoped that QuyhoaNDH would have more chances to cooperate with ACI to conduct humane missions for poor patients as well as training program for QuyhoaNDH staffs.
Responding to Dr. Tuan Anh Vu, Dr. Jeffrey Marsh, the Team leader, said that he agreed to support training program on cleft lip and palate surgery for 01 QuyhoaNDH doctor in Vietnam or abroad, and expected it is first step for the prospect of building a comprehensive cleft lip and palate center in Central - Highlands of Vietnam located at QuyhoaNDH.
